In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G-Class are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Urus doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Mercedes G-Class has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Urus doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The G-Class has a standard Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Urus doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The Mercedes G-Class’ rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Lamborghini Urus does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the G-Class and the Urus have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The G-Class comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Urus’ 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

There are over 9 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Lamborghini dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the G-Class’ warranty.

The G-Class has more powerful engines than the Urus:

On the EPA test cycle the G 580 running on electricity gets better mileage than the Urus SE running on electricity (68 city/53 hwy vs. 46 city/50 hwy MPGe).

On the EPA test cycle the G 550 running its gasoline engine gets better fuel mileage than the Urus 4.0 turbo V8 running its gasoline engine (17 city/19 hwy vs. 14 city/19 hwy).

The G 580 can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 239 miles. The Urus SE has to start its internal combustion engine after only 37 miles.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the G-Class AMG 63’s fuel efficiency. The Urus doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Regardless of its engine, regenerative brakes improve the G-Class’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. Lamborghini only offers a regenerative brake system on the Urus SE.

The G-Class has 3.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Urus (26.4 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes G-Class higher (4 to 10 out of 10) than the Lamborghini Urus (2). This means the G-Class produces up to 40.6 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Urus every 15,000 miles.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes G-Class, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Urus.

For better traction, the G-Class’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Urus (295/40R22 vs. 285/35R23).

The G-Class has a standard full size spare (not available on 580) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Urus; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

For greater off-road capability the G-Class has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Urus (9.5 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the G-Class to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The G 550 is 1 foot, 7.3 inches shorter than the Urus S, making the G-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The G-Class has 1 inch more front headroom, 2.5 inches more rear headroom and .9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Urus.

The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Urus with its rear seat up (34.8 vs. 21.8 cubic feet). The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Urus with its rear seat folded (68.6 vs. 56.4 cubic feet).

The G-Class 580 can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the G-Class can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Urus can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The G-Class has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Urus doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The G-Class’ power window, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Urus’ cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the G-Class has a standard rear wiper. The Urus doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The G-Class has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Urus.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes G-Class has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The Urus doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Mercedes G-Class outsold the Lamborghini Urus by over five to one during 2024.
